Create and send Assignments to Students

Revolutionise your homework and quizzes with Assignments in Classroom Lessons.

What is an Assignment?

Assignments are a feature of Goodnotes Classroom, allowing you to send homework or knowledge tests to your students easily and efficiently within a Lesson. Assignments are sets of questions specifically designed for Grading and Sharing in Classroom.

Assignment Phases

Initial Submission: Students submit work, locked with Lock Type 1 (cannot view or edit). Work remains locked until the teacher returns it.

Re-submission (Optional): Enabled by teachers during assignment creation.
When returned: Original submission is locked with Lock Type 2 (view-only). Students can create a new draft for re-submission.

Important Notes: Re-submissions must be enabled during assignment creation. Lock Type 2 is only available if re-submissions are enabled.

For standard assignments (no re-submission): Returned work is Lock Type 2 (view-only), but no re-submission is allowed.

Creating an Assignment

To create a new Assignment, make sure you are in Prep Mode. Create your assignment by writing questions, creating Answer Zones for Students to write their answers in and anything else you want to send to your students on the page.

You can then publish your Assignment using the Publish Assignment button:

  1. Choose the Share icon in the top right corner.

Note: Each page can only be part of one Assignment.

Students will then be notified that a new Assignment is due and will be able to see it in their copy of the Lesson.

Grading and Returning Assignments

Once a student has submitted their Assignment, the Teacher can start grading. Changes added to the submitted Assignment will only be seen by the Student once Teacher has returned it.

Assignments can be returned individually or in bulk:

  1. Make sure you are in Teach Mode
  2. On the navigator at the bottom of the screen and switch to Feedback View
  3. Find and open the chosen Assignment
  4. Grade or annotate the Assignment however you please, then tap on Done

Read about using Smart Clusters to make Grading quicker!

You will then be able to use the Class Navigator tool to browse through each Student's answers, use Classroom's Grading options and leave annotations and notes before you return the Assignment:

  1. Select Manage the option barIMG_0240.PNG.png
  2. Choose a Student or Select All, then tap on ReturnIMG_0232.PNG.png

Students will be notified once the assignment has been returned. After an Assignment is returned, Students can make changes to correct their work according to teacher feedback. Goodnotes will retain a snapshot of the returned Assignment on their record.

Assignments also work with Google Classroom! Learn more here.

Enabling Assignment Re-submission (for Teachers)

After you've created your assignment, in the Publish Assignment window, you will see the Allow Re-submission toggle.

  1. Click the Allow re-submission toggle (green = enabled)

Please note: When viewing By Question, you will not be able to swipe back and forth between pages unless they are classed as Assignments, remember to come out of of this Smart View when you want to access other pages of your Lesson.

While Students are working on the Assignment, Teachers can view their changes in real-time but will see that the Student has not yet submitted the assignment. Feedback by the teacher can be seen in real-time by the student.

Students sometimes may not be able to see notifications for new Assignments. If this occurs, please ask them to close the Goodnotes app and reopen it again.
