When you first purchase and implement Classroom, your Teachers and Students will need help getting set up. This easy guide can be sent out to your Students to help them access to Classroom Features on their copies of Goodnotes 6. For help with setting Teachers up with Classroom, please use this guide.
1. What is Classroom?
Classroom is a new app that allows your Teachers to set you Assignments and share interactive Lessons with you directly in Goodnotes 6. Don't worry, you aren't going to need to learn a whole new app, Classroom is just for your Teacher! However, you will have a new set of Tools you can use to complete homework, get feedback, and go through Lesson materials in your free study time.
2. Downloading the app
You should already have the Goodnotes 6 app on your iPad but if you have not used it in the past, you should download it now to get started.
If you usually download apps yourself on your institution's iPads, you can head to the App Store and download it. If you don't, you can contact your Admin who should be able to deploy the app.
3. Create or Sign In with the correct Goodnotes Account
In order to access the features of Classroom Lessons, you will need to make sure you are part of your School or Institution's Classroom Organisation. This is done by logging into Goodnotes 6 with the email account given to you by your School, this is likely one that ends with your School's name at the end of the email address.
Once you have downloaded Goodnotes 6 you can sign in/create an account using the following steps:
- Choose the correct login method. If your School uses Google Accounts, choose Sign in with Google.
- Enter your email address and password. Do not use the Hide My Email function!
- Agree to the Terms and Conditions
You should now be logged into Goodnotes 6! If you have done everything correctly, you should see your School or Institution name in the Sidebar along with any Class Folders you have been added to.
I am logged in as a free user
If you seem to be logged in as a free user and only have access to 3 Notebooks, you should ask your Teacher to contact your Admin as they may need to increase their number of Licenses for the app and redeploy it.
I am logged in as a full user but don't see any Classroom features
Not to worry right now, you may not have been added to any Classes by your Teachers. Ask a Teacher if they can add you to a Class Folder.
4. Set up your Backup
Now you are logged in to Goodnotes 6, you will need to make sure you backup is properly set up so that you do not lose your work.
Lessons shared with you by your teacher will be backed up on a separate system from your other Notebooks. Your Notebooks will be stored on your device, synced via iCloud if enabled and backed up with an Automatic Backup if you switch this on and sign in to your chosen backup service. Please read the following articles to make sure you are backing up your notes properly:
- Sync Goodnotes documents between iPhones/iPads/Macs
- Use Auto Backup to automatically create a copy of your documents in a supported cloud storage
- Back up and restore your library manually
5. Using Class Folders
A Class Folder is a virtual class that a Teacher has enrolled you in. Each Class Folder will contain any number of Lessons, these Lessons are created by your Teacher and shared with all your classmates in the Class Folder.
Class Folders
You will see your Class Folders in the Sidebar in Goodnotes 6 and in your Library like in the screenshot below.
There are two ways to participate in a Lesson:
- The Teacher will give you a QR code to scan, to join the Class folder (which contains 1 or more Lessons).
- The Teacher has added you to a Class folder by finding your name in your Institutions Student list.
Please note: Only Teachers can create and edit Class Folders.
6. Lessons and Assignments
Lessons
A Lesson is like a Notebook in Goodnotes 6 that is created by your Teacher and shared with you and all your Class. The Teacher will retain a master copy, and will be able to see all of your annotations on your copy, so be careful what you write!
Assignments
Sometimes, your Teacher may set certain pages of a Lesson as Assignments, you will receive notifications about these in the Lesson itself along with the due date. You will then be able to complete the Assignment and return it using the steps below:
- Scroll to any one of the pages of the assignment then select the Document icon at the top of the page OR see all Assignments in a Lesson by selecting the Smart Views icon in the top left, and toggling By Question.
- Fill out the Assignment with your best answers
- Choose the Submit button in the Assignment taskbar
- Preview the Assignment submission and select the Submit button
- You can unsubmit and make changes at any time before the due date
Your Assignments may sometimes include Answer Zones. these are zones on the page that you are expected to write in. This will allow your Teacher to easily scroll through Student answers to questions. Be careful to stay within the lines of these Answer Zones as your Assignments may otherwise not be marked properly!
