Fix formatting issues on Imports

Your Teachers will likely create Lessons from a variety of different sources. Most of these should be supported by Goodnotes 6 and therefore are also supported by Goodnotes Classroom. However, files from some programs may include app-specific features that Goodnotes Classroom does not know how to read and so can end up looking strange once imported.

Fix formatting issues

What kind of files can have formatting issues?

For the most part, improper formatting will usually be a result of files being imported as PowerPoint files or Word documents. As these programs may use many different multimedia formats, custom sizes and different sets of instructions about what to do with dynamic elements, these often get rejigged around when converted into Goodnotes files by Classroom.

Fixing these issues

These issues can usually be fixed easily using the following steps:

  1. Launch the file in its native app (PowerPoint or Word)
  2. Export it as a PDF and save it somewhere safe.
    • If on a computer, send the PDF to your iPad.
  3. Open the PDF in Classroom by importing it as a new Workbook

Fix other issues with imports

Other than formatting, your Teachers may experience other issues with certain imported files, for example:

  • Text Recognition on Text-based PDFs: This will likely be due to the OCR layer on the original PDF. If you have issues, please check that Text Recognition is working on other apps with the same PDF. If it is, please contact Support and send them a copy of the document to test on our devices.
  • Pages not loading: This will likely be due to problems with rendering. Check that the PDF is working on other user's apps (Classroom or Goodnotes 6). If not then it may be that the PDF is too large and is causing the app difficulties. In this case, you can try:
    • Spitting the PDF into a few smaller PDFs and importing them as separate Workbooks.
    • Try compressing the PDF before importing again. You can use an online PDF compression tool for this.
  • Failed imports: Please read this article if you are having import failures: Determine What is Causing Import Failures
