Exporting your Lesson as a PDF

If you need to send a Lesson to someone who isn't using Goodnotes Classroom, or need to print it, you can easily export it as a PDF.

Where to Export?

You can find options to export your Lesson or a particular page or set of pages in multiple places.

In the Nav Bar

  1. Head to the Share and Export Menu in your Nav Bar
  2. Select either Export this Page or Export All to bring up Export Options

In the Sidebar

  1. Use the Select Tool to select all the pages you want to export
  2. Tap Export in the options to bring up Export Options

In the Class Folder

  1. Use the Select Tool to select your Lesson, or tap its name to bring up further options.
  2. Tap Export to bring up Export Options

What can I Export?

For Students

Your Students can export their own work, but not the work of other Students. They will also have the option to include or export Teacher comments in the export.

For Teachers

As a Teacher, you have more options for exporting Lessons. You can export just the original Lesson, include the Whiteboard layer, or select a specific Student's work to include. You can toggle these options on or off in the Export Options pop-up.

  • Base Layer Only: Export only the base layer of the document with no student work.
  • Base Layer + Whiteboard Layer: Export the base layer and the Whiteboard layer which includes any additional instructions or notes you’ve added.
  • Base Layer + Selected Student Work: Export the base layer along with the work of a selected Student. You will be able to choose a Student from a dropdown list.

Please note: Student work will be exported as individual files in a zip archive using the name of each Student in the file title. Keep in mind that Answer Zones answers are not included in Lesson exports.

Where is my PDF saved?

Once you have chosen your Export Options and tapped Export, a share sheet will pop up allowing you to select a location on your iPad or Cloud Storage through the Files app. Select your location and tap Save.

If you are having issues with Exporting your Lessons, please see this article for troubleshooting steps.

Current Limitations

  • When exporting multiple Lessons, you can not choose which student work to export. If selected in the export settings, all students' annotations on top of the worksheet will be exported as individual files in a zip archive.
  • When exporting multiple documents where at least one document is not a Lesson, you cannot export student work. By default, the export will only contain your own annotations (but not the whiteboard mode).
  • The selection of which student work to export only works for export in PDF or image format, but not in Goodnotes format. For Goodnotes document, only the teacher's annotations on the worksheet will be exported.
  • When multiple students join the same Lesson during grading mode, flipping pages might occur automatically. Teacher can kill the app and reopen it after all students have joined the document.
